It’s rough being in college; delegating the workload, managing a job, friends, boys or girls, ex’s who your not quite over, teachers, getting ready for grad school, being away from home, away from family… No one ever said college was easy, it was just an implication because college is the time that you get to be on your own and you party, you hook up with people, you drink, you smoke, you make bad choices, you find love, you lose love, you find your way, and you either make in life of you don’t.
I have two words for you…
It’s scary.
I’m a junior in college right now and I’ve found that while being in college a lot of people lose who they are as a human. Sometimes people jump into a wrong crowd, they lose the grip they have on the things they love, they step into the cycle of work, school, homework, party, repeat; some people are the complete opposite, they hit the books and they don’t stop until they’ve graduated; some people find themselves in a funk where they just keep on keeping on because it’s all they have left- and with cycles like those, they step into a world where they forget who they are. Whether it’s the people they’ve surrounded themselves, the lack there of, or any other reason why they lost their grounds; I’m here to tell you and to tell them to stop and take a minute.
Take one minute, don’t be embarrassed, just take a piece of paper and a pen and write down a list of things that you love about yourself… and I don’t mean like “I’m funny” “I look good in a dress” or “I have good friends” I want you to really reach in and write a list of things that people don’t notice about you, the small things that you wish were caught on camera, the things that make you who you are- because you have to remind yourself from time to time how amazing and beautiful you and your soul really is.
Sometimes people love you, they love you but they don’t know why, and sometimes people fall out of love with you, and sometimes you forget who you are, sometimes you fight with family or someone who means the world to you and sometimes you find yourself alone surrounded by people… so write a list because you’re important, and the only person who can love you for who you are and your entirety is yourself.
A list of things I love about myself;
- The birthmark on my left arm- it looks like a bunch of islands
- I cry when I see less fortunate people than write them letters
- My goals and dreams to become a world renown genetic scientist to cure Alzheimers
- That I’m a goofball
- How much I love my little brother
- That I talk in a British accent when I’m alone because I wish I had one- and that I laugh when it slowly turns into an Australian one
- I dance in the shower
- I cry when my mom cries
- How much I care about the people around me
- My curly hair
- The faces I make when I don’t know what to say
- My feet!
- My sense of adventure
- The strength I mentally feed myself during an uphill battle
- I laugh when other people laugh
- I smile when other people are happy
- I don’t wish revenge upon others, I pray for their ignorance
- I make this weird *tsk tsk tsk* sound with my mouth every here and there
- My devotion to others
- I smile with my mouth wide open and with all of my teeth
- I squint a lot
- I’m stubborn
- I’m always trying to improve something
- I like to clean
- My smile
- I’m alive because I made a choice that being suicidal and depressed all the time wasn’t worth it anymore
Nothing and no one is worth losing who you are inside, so love yourself and love the people around you because you’re on this earth once and forgetting who you are for a moment is a moment wasted. You’re a beautiful individual different from the next and you need to remind yourself why you’re so special; and that is the most important action I can think of, loving yourself and keeping hold to who you are.
